Bletchley Park, England, May 30, 1944

Kenzie was reviewing her list of jokes with the clipboard man when the soulful, seductive sounds of a saxophone brought conversations in the Assembly Hall to a standstill. Every head turned toward the stage, including Kenzie’s. Her breath hitched when she recognized the man with the sax.

McBain? Impossible.

She wove through the crowd, as if following the Pied Piper, mesmerized by the sound of angels transforming music into pure emotion. The tips of her toes bumped the edge of the platform, bringing her to a standstill mere feet from where he stood onstage.

Gifted was one of the few words that came to mind as she listened to his interpretation of the popular favorite. Other women gathered near her, and they all swayed with the soft, slow jazz. Her heart thudded in time with the music.

McBain didn’t just play with his lips and fingers. He played with his entire being. He was a high wire act of musical textures, and both the sound and the man were purely erotic. He captivated the audience, and as the last note hung in the air, the crowd went wild.

Molly slipped in behind Kenzie and whispered, “I’ve never heard ‘Summertime’ played with so much emotion.”

The music still reverberated in Kenzie’s soul. “I”—words stuck in her dry throat—“haven’t either.”

McBain set down the sax and jumped off the three-foot high stage, landing inches from Molly and Kenzie.

The stage manager grabbed the mike. “We hope Major McBain will be available for an encore performance Thursday night. Buy your tickets now to guarantee a seat.”

A buzz erupted around the ticket table as it was swamped with purchasers. You would have thought news of a surprise performance by Paul McCartney or Bruce Springsteen had just been announced. Who was this guy? She’d never heard his name or seen his picture in any of her research. A jazz musician of his caliber would have been recognized at some point during the war. There would have been a recording of him playing at a venue, or a newsreel. His talent wouldn’t have been lost to the ages unless…

Like so many other talented men and women, he must not have survived the war. The thought left her shaking.

A woman rushed up and wrapped her hand around his arm, suggesting a certain amount of familiarity between them. “Major, you were simply divine. I can’t wait to hear more Thursday night.” She fluttered thick lashes. “Let’s go to the beer hut. You did promise me a drink.”

He had a helpless, deer-in-the-headlights sort of look.

The woman was a Cruella de Vil type, probably very intelligent, but had all the earmarks of a woman pampered by a wealthy London family and used to getting her way.

“I don’t know if I’m more surprised about encountering you here or listening to you play,” Kenzie said. “You need to take that act on the road. Molly can probably line up a gig or two.”

“That was my one and only wartime appearance. But thank you for the offer.
